For Joe: In what direction should Keanu's Career be headed?

I think of him as I do Clint Eastwood. Not many Kudos as an actor, but as a director-actor he is unstoppable. I would hope Keanu could do the same.
Peace Out,
HC

He is probably headed that way...and he will eventually get recognised... It took Henry Fonda years...which is sad...
Sandra got there today... Keanu's day will come..
he needs to do another blockbuster... soon though... and then he can concentrate on what he really loves.... a popular movie doesn't hurt every now and then...

How about Fahrenheit 451? Yes, I know it's science fiction, but it also has a great social/political message that seems right up Keanu's alley...what do you all think?

No, not a remake of the MOVIE Fahrenheit 451, but perhaps a sort of mini-series version of Ray Bradbury's original book...better yet...do something along the lines of Alien Voices--you remember the one with Leonard Nimoy and John de Lancie (as well as other Star Trek alumni). Now THAT would be cool. Or better yet, do Fahrenheit 451 in a similar fashion to the remake of Fail Safe. Film it as a TV movie--in black and white! That would certainly be interesting.

For me I have always held the notion that Keanu should do a role that goes from one side all the way to the other. Meaning going from very very simple to uber intelligent. I don't know if anyone is familiar with it but the play "Flowers for Algernon" is what comes to mind. Algernon is a mouse and a scientist performs a miracle operation on the mouse to improve it's intelligence. It is so successful so the same operation is performed on a human subject and is again successful. The drama is that having someone "changed" from what they were simple sweet and a bit dim - to someone who is uber intelligent is that they realize the fault in others. Therefore others begin to fear them, and they are more lonely than ever before. In the play the mouse shows signs of problems, and eventually dies far earlier that expected. So the human realizes his fate as well, wishing he had never had the life changing surgery.
Why I have always held the notion that this would be good for Keanu is that he had a far broader range than most give him credit for. To go to both edges (simple and smart) in one piece would allow the audience to perhaps "see" that range better. For many it would make him appear less wooden as he has been described and for him - it would finally give him some meat and potatoes as an actor.
He has always given me the idea that a duality within the character is something that is unique to Keanu. Not many could pull it off. I for one would love to see him do a transformation like that.

And, while we are on the subject of Farenheit 451, I for one say - Leave British Classics Alone ! The British versions of many sci fi pieces have amazing acting. Just wonderful. From Quatermass onward. What bugs me is some American Sci Fi. So why not the Martian Chronicles? That has some interesting possibilities and they can even CGI it to death and still have a decent story.

Lizaird... now that's a great thought.
Coincidence ( or not
) 'Flowers for Algernon' is one of my favorite books.
But... the movie has been done already .
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062794/
and apparently Will Smith wants to team up with Gabriele Muccino for a remake.
:\
as Keanu said once, there is a limited number of stories out there
although I'd love the irony of it... he was accused of being 'robotic' and 'expresionless' so he goes and plays Klaatu. He was accused of playing himself - he goes and makes Henry's Crime. ( okay, those who didn't read the script will not get the joke.
)
He was accused of being dumb, so what better tongue-in-cheek response than playing a simpleton that becomes a genius 'for a day' ?
Besides, you're right, he'd make a great Charlie.

That's why I'm looking forward to that modern adaptation of Jekyll and Hyde...

See that's why I like you Luca - I don't have to explain a lot. You get it.
And yes I really believe that Keanu could bring a sweet melancholy to Charlie. And yes it has been done as well as many variations right up to and including Lawnmower Man. I don't think Wil Smith has the same subtleties and wouldn't give it full justice. But boy would that be a switcheroo if he did something like that and suddenly audiences in general finally "got" him.
And yes I am still holding my breath for J&H. He is soooo restrained sometimes I just wanna smack him - so he could finally get a role that would "release the hounds" and see all that smokey undercurrent he carries.

I also think it is time for him to do something cool. Not ordinary, slick and cool. And glib. He is so good at deadpan wit that it would really be thrilled to see him do something with style and confidence but a bit dark.
Oh yea, thats Constantine 2: Constantine's Question

Lawnmower Man... how could I forget that one?
Afraid Will Smith will try to make that movie his Forrest Gump. And it would be a pity...
But time will tell.

... need any help with the smacking ?
And don't get me started on Constantine 2. Were I living in the US, I'd go on hunger strike in front of the Warner Bros. building , just to get them considering the project.
But they're making Green Lantern instead...
don't get me wrong... but that's not 'my' kind of comics.
( okay, now I must be careful if I ever apply for an US visa
didn't mean that bit about the Warner building.
or... not quite
)

I totally hear ya on that one. But it is not Warner Brothers. It's all of them. I read somewhere that the target audience that studios are aiming for is a 21 year old girl. GOOD GOD!!!!!!!!!
What happened to all of the other demographics? I have been a staunch and loyal film lover for all of my life and I am feeling betrayed. They aren't making films for me. (Except rarely - and even then it is a tough nugget).
They are forgetting the Titanic Rule.
Titanic Rule: Make a film that people will pay to see once, (to cover your investment cost) then beef it up to make it one that people will pay to see repeatedly. That is where your financial return is.
Not many films now adays that I would pay for repeatedly. (Current exception - 2012 - Best Destruction Film ever - you gotta see that on a big screen)

er... I must admit I went to see Street Kings four times. It's just the way the score sounded in a theater...
looks like you and I have to settle for indie movies.
we already sound like the two grumpy old men from the Muppets ...
